The safest starting point is the application itself: identify the document, the country, and whether the photo is being uploaded, printed or both.

The family workflow

1. Gather everyone’s originals before editing.
2. Create a small checklist for the application each person needs.
3. Process one person from source to final export so mistakes do not multiply.
4. Name the finished files clearly.
5. Keep the originals separate from the final deliverables.

Why the order matters

Doing the steps in a different order can create avoidable work. For example, repeated resizing and JPEG recompression can reduce quality, while changing the crop before deciding the final frame can force you to start again.

When you need another version

Start again from the master rather than resizing the finished JPEG. Different applications can require different crops, dimensions or file limits, and a clean source makes the second output much easier.

Indian identity documents are not one single photo standard

India is a good example of why a generic “ID photo size” chart can mislead. PAN Form 49A specifies two recent colour photographs of 3.5 × 2.5 cm with a white background for the paper-form route. ECI Form 6 uses a recent unsigned 4.5 × 3.5 cm colour photo with a white background. Parivahan Form 4 refers to three recent passport-size photographs, with a note about laminated-card use. UIDAI treats the facial photograph as biometric information captured or updated at an enrolment centre. These are different workflows, even though all four are casually described as “ID photos.”
