8 simple steps for a better visa photo

Use a plain background
Use the background required by your visa authority. For U.S. visas, the Department of State specifies a plain white or off-white background.

Face soft, even light
Avoid harsh shadows, direct flash reflections and strong side lighting.

Keep the camera at eye level
Put the phone straight in front of you rather than above, below or at an extreme angle.

Leave enough space
Keep your full head visible and leave enough surrounding space for accurate cropping and sizing.

Look straight at the camera
Keep the face centered, both eyes open and follow the required expression.

Keep the face unobstructed
Follow the exact rules for glasses, head coverings, hair and accessories for your visa category.

U.S. VISA EXAMPLE
Do not treat every visa as the same size
For U.S. visa photos, the Department of State specifies a square 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) paper photo and, for digital images, a square image with 600–1200 px dimensions. The head is specified at 50–69% of the image height for digital submissions. Other countries and visa routes can have different requirements.
