The safest starting point is the application itself: identify the document, the country, and whether the photo is being uploaded, printed or both.

The application-night workflow

1. Read the help text attached to the upload field.
2. Use the portal’s specified file limits rather than a generic internet chart.
3. Prepare the smallest number of changes necessary.
4. Upload once and note any error text.
5. If rejected, fix the named issue instead of changing unrelated parts of the portrait.

The part that cannot be automated away

The applicant still has to decide which application the image is for. That context determines which preset, dimensions and editing limits make sense.

UIDAI guidance asks the operator and applicant to check the accuracy and clarity of the photograph during enrolment/update.

For a local print

Measure one printed copy before producing the whole sheet. If the dimensions are wrong, fix the print scaling first rather than resizing the source photograph unnecessarily.

Indian identity documents are not one single photo standard

India is a good example of why a generic “ID photo size” chart can mislead. PAN Form 49A specifies two recent colour photographs of 3.5 × 2.5 cm with a white background for the paper-form route. ECI Form 6 uses a recent unsigned 4.5 × 3.5 cm colour photo with a white background. Parivahan Form 4 refers to three recent passport-size photographs, with a note about laminated-card use. UIDAI treats the facial photograph as biometric information captured or updated at an enrolment centre. These are different workflows, even though all four are casually described as “ID photos.”
