The measurement first

Millimetres and inches describe physical output; pixels describe digital dimensions; DPI connects pixels to physical size during printing. If an authority already states the required pixel dimensions, use them directly. If you are building a print file from millimetres, the basic relationship is pixels = millimetres × DPI ÷ 25.4.

Where calculations stop being enough

A mathematically correct file can still fail because the face is the wrong size inside the frame, the background is unsuitable, the compression introduces visible artefacts, or the application expects a different file type. Finish every conversion with a visual and application-specific check.

The number is only one part of the job

A calculator can give you a dimension, ratio or file target. It cannot tell whether the head is correctly positioned, whether the background is acceptable, or whether the authority permits an edit.

Save the input that produced the number

Record the dimensions, DPI assumption and intended output. That makes it easier to reproduce the same sheet later if the application asks for another copy.

Open the exported file outside the editor, check its actual dimensions and size, and compare the portrait with the current official examples. Keep the original capture untouched in case the application needs a different version.

Why “passport size” is not one measurement

Different authorities use different physical sizes and face-position rules. A 35 × 45 mm output, a 50 × 70 mm output and a 51 × 51 mm output can all belong to legitimate passport or visa workflows. Start from the destination, not the nickname.
